I got some chicken meat meant for soup (Kleinfleisch in German), with bones and all.
I left it all in the slow cooker for a day, and the bones are soft and nice too eat.
I'm just concerned that it might be too much calcium? I'm eating it over 5 days or so.
It wasn't that much bones, I'd estimate around 50 grams (the chicken piece was 5-600g).
Edit: chicken bones are 30% calcium, 4% magnesium (http://rdo.psu.ac.th/sjstweb/journal/28 ... source.pdf)
Which would be like 3g calcium/day, maybe I should throw some of the bones (if I manage to find them :)).

Yes, i would advice against eating so much calcium.

I'm wondering if I can do the same with fish, e.g. dump a whole mackerel with head and all in the slow cooker? Anyone tried this?
I read the result becomes bitter if cooked more then an hour, though this is not for slow cooker.

Fish needs little time in the slow cooker; its usually done in 15 minutes to half an hour max.
(and yes, of course you need to remove the gut)
Shrimps are done even faster.
Chicken needs a little longer than fish, and beef much longer,
depending on how much connective tissue it contains.
