*CurlyGirl holds out a shiny two-cent coin which she intends to spend here*

I personally was not offended by Oscar's picture, since I think I understand the tone in which it was posted. In my view, it was not meant to offend anyone or kick up a stink on an otherwise civil forum.

Now, I don't mean to pick a fight with you, benzapp, but how can you say Oscar's "personal opinion is really irrelevant" and yet expect the rest of us to honour YOUR personal opinion that Oscar's picture was distasteful or disrespectful? Obviously, everyone's sense of what is distasteful or offensive differs, because each of us has been simmering in a unique cultural/social 'stew' since birth. So perhaps we should just honour the genuine intention behind a forum such as this, i.e. it is to be a PUBLIC space that is democratic and non-hierarchical (at least in theory) where we can ALL share our views freely without censorship. And I know some of you will come at me with arguments about having to restrict certain people's liberties so that this democracy can function, but honestly, is that a teneble position in the context of an INTERNET forum? Isn't the internet supposed to be one of the last bastions of freedom of expression? (Well, maybe I am naively shutting out all the webvertising and neglecting to think of the corporate encroachment onto this wonderful global network...) Benzapp, if posts like Oscar's could 'get you fired' then perhaps you shouldn't click on them while you're at work? Or immediately click on something else if you see something here that offends you? Personal freedom, personal choice. Just my two cents' worth...

MY personal opinion is irrelevant as well.

The purpose of this site is to further access to the diet put forth by Wai. This is not your personal forum to discuss whatever you want. Many, if not all large companies in the English speaking world have policies that prohibit viewing pictures such as that. There are people who lose their jobs for viewing such material.

My own company has such a policy.

I realize that the prolific posters on this site, including most likely yourself, are probably college students who are enthralled with this so-called freedom you enjoy, but that is not the way the rest of the world works. We live in a world of rampant political correctness.

All I am asking is that you be respectful of how what you post can affect others, as well as impede the accessibility of this site to the largest possible audience.

For a sample of the kinds of reasonable rules that apply to this site, I refer you to the following example:

Amazingly, as I'm a prude, I wasn't offended by the picture either as the spirit in which it was posted was not offensive. It was a friendly joke, not a porn fest. Men and women alike were invited to laugh, not to lust.

If seeing that photo could have Benzapp fired then of course he has the right to ask that it be removed and that pictures like that not be posted in future. I'm sure Oscar would not have objected to this.

Benzapp I don't want to pick a fight with you either, but I must say it is your tone that is getting everyones back up. You could have just asked Oscar nicely not to post pictures like that in case you get fired. You didn't need to have a go at him.

Oscars posts including the one with the pic were friendly, and convivial, and so nobody was offended. Your tone was and still is hostile and unfriendly. Was there any need for that?

In this particular matter, I think you are acting like an immature child with a bruised ego. .
No, he's acting like a bewildered child with hostility directed at him without provocation.

Then again I'd say less like a child more like a sausage. *nods* or a centipede....or an emu.

I do apologize if it comes across that way. Yet, at the same time, this should have been a non-issue. Oscar should have known better. Try posting that pic on Fark.com, a site that has a highly sexually charged atmosphere. You will be banned.

I don't really have the time or desire to craft the least offensive argument over something that is self evident. Suffice it to say though, I don't hold anything against anyone here. You are all but random names on the internet. All I can say relax, and don't take everything so personally. Its just text, and some of us are not poets nor experts in the usage of emoticons.

Peace.

Thank God I'm a Vulcan.

Can I use the word 'GOD'?

Thank Mother Earth I'm a Vulcan. Is this okay...or should I include the Moon and saturn too?

My ears hurt.

Um, then why spend, like, 5 posts having an argument? Whatever.

Btw, I see that you're in Brooklyn. What market/restaurant do you recommend for sashimi?

Well if it wasn't such a big deal why not PM Oscar directly that his pic made you uncomfortable (since apparently you are the only one so far who has been bothered) and that you would prefer he not post this kind of "provocative" images. I'm sure he would have removed it himself.
Oscar should have known better
Not necessarily... we don't all come from the States where such things are unfortunatly highly sensored and sensitive issues...even though we claim to be a country where all have freedom of speech and expression... Erhm hum.
Plus, taken in context it was just a (good) joke, nothing more. Why not choose to look at certain threads at home... Or is it just an excuse?
I do apologize if it comes across that way
Thanks! Maybe you need to eat a few more bananas. :)

I think that the previous posts by other members express my position on the issue very well. I'm sorry this has become so blown up though.

Nevertheless, there is still something I feel I have to address.

Some of the posts have been, in my opinion, unnecessarily aggressive, patronizing, and derogatory.
For example remarks like:
benzapp wrote:In this particular matter, I think you are acting like an immature child with a bruised ego.
and:
benzapp wrote:I realize that the prolific posters on this site, including most likely yourself, are probably college students...
are totally uncalled for, and don't belong on a forum which is friendly, helpful, open-minded, and above all respectful to every one of its members.

Having said this, I hope things like this will never happen again, forgive and forget, and lets continue with the things we're supposed to do here. :)

Surely that political correctness is something we should counter at every opportunity? Isn't political correctness just another expression of the totalitarian corporate mentality? And after all, in a world of so many cultures, with so many different schemes to determine what is polite, what is offensive, etc, ANYTHING any of us says might be offensive to SOMEONE out there on this planet. So, if we really were to adhere to the requirements of this so-called political correctness, we would be prevented from saying anything at all. Just another way of saying, there is no room for personal opinions in this world, never mind bold, incendiary, 'revolutionary' thought! Well, again, this is MY view, and I am prepared to take responsibility for it, which is perhaps what political correctness prevents us from doing... it has us living in a world where, if we cannot possibly say anything offensive or do anything that offends anyone else, then we can never have opportunities for being accountable for our opinions/actions. And, therefore, we can NEVER have opportunities for growth. This is the world of the shopping mall, where everyone is a two year-old child, with hands-outstretched toward the candy aisle. This is not a world that requires our maturity, our accountability, or our courage to express our true views. What a shame, to see the 'old' world pass away and be replaced by this politically-correct sham world with its neon lights and promises of infinite peace and happiness.

Hear, hear, Oscar. *peace and love to all*

I think it was really nice of you to apologise, and I'm glad you weren't being intentionally aggro....it is easy over the internet to come accross as shirty when you don't mean to. I'm relieved you didn't mean to. I'm glad the battle (which nobody intended to start but everyone accidentally fell into) is over, and I think we could ALL do with eating a few more bananas. Along with a few dates. (tryptophan = sedative)

I thought it pretty clear, but since you mention it Huntress I'll do the same!
Well said Oscar and CurlyGirl! :D

I found some delicious sun-dried dates the other day at an organic market...Never tasted dates like that before! YUM!
Has anybody tasted fresh dates? In Europe they're in season in september/october and can be found at turkish markets. They are a bit tangy though and ripen quickly...
